About us
Monterosola is one of Tuscany’s finest contemporary wineries producing exceptional and award-winning wines that embody the magnificent character of this ancient land. Resting on a hillside overlooking the medieval city of Volterra, the Monterosola estate combines the very best of traditional winemaking techniques with state-of-the art technology. Here, our dedicated team of winemakers work in harmony with nature to produce 1st class wines that have unmistakable qualities unique to Monterosola.
Situated on a plateau above two ancient wooded valleys with far-reaching views to the Tyrrhenian coast and beyond. Monterosola has its own complex microclimate which provides our vines with the optimum growing conditions. Here, a regular breeze promotes the natural health and energy of the vines, which, in turn, produce the very best grapes.

Just 50km from the respected coastal region of Bolgheri and 30km from the world-famous hills of Chianti, Monterosola sits perfectly in the middle of two of the best wine growing locations in the world. With 21 hectares of vineyards producing both white and red wines, the estate also has olive groves, woodlands, valleys and pastures.
A family owned business, Monterosola represents a new-breed of fresh-thinking winemakers where the quality of the wines is considered long before the vine is even planted in the ground. Our winemaking philosophy is to gently support and inherently promote the health of the land and the life of the vines, securing the success and ultimate quality of future harvests.

Our skilled team of winemakers are led by CEO, agronomist and winemaker Michele Senesi. His passion for the region and his drive for making world-class wines is evident in all areas of Monterosola’s activities. In adition to Michele’s comittment and vision, our wines also benefit from the innovative work of oenologist Stefano Dini.
At Monterosola our wine prouction methods are also supervised by world-renowned viticulturist Alberto Antonini who has previously worked with some of Italy’s most prestigious cantinas including Antinori and Frescobaldi.
The estate has, in fact, been producing excellent wines since 1990, yet it entered a new and exciting era in 2013 when the land was purchased by the Thomaeus family who recognised the true potential of its unique location and the character of the terroir. In 2015 Bengt and Ewa Thomaeus embarked on an impressive project, to design and build a grand-scale cantina with purpose-built facilities for wine tastings and exclusive events.

The construction was completed in the spring of 2019 when Monterosola opened its cellars to visitors from around the world. It is fair to say that Monterosola has successfully placed the Volterra region on the wine-map of Italy.
Monterosola is now one of the most impressive landmarks on the wine-trails of Tuscany, a 5-storey property featuring an imposing watchtower, private roof terraces, elegant courtyards, alfresco lounge areas and landscaped gardens. Within the architecturally impressive building, guests can discover state-of-the-art cellars, a VIP dining room, purpose built tasting room, various events spaces and a welcoming reception and wine-shop.
